A week ago, the local animal rescue called my partner to ask if she could help them. They had received a call from the local police, who had been called to a home where they had found a deceased person, and over 200 animals. They needed help sorting out over 60 guinea pigs, that appeared to have been there as feeders for the snakes.
Bellow is a reel from the local Animal Rescues instagram.
She has often helped them with guinea pigs, and this was no different. She went there, straight after work, and was shocked to see the state of all the animals. Almost half of the guinea pigs could not be saved. They had been starved and some were missing eyes, and not only part of their ears but had no ears whatsoever! She helped them sort through them all, checking for serious injuries, grouping them according to sex, age, and how pregnant they were, if they were. 3 of the pregnant females, she chose to bring into foster here, as they were very close to giving birth. They were so small and young, that they almost did not even look pregnant. They actually all gave birth the following day, each to two babies!
We had planned to keep them in a quarantine cage until we were sure that they had no parasites, or any infectious diseases but after giving birth, it turned out that one of them, would not accept being in the same cage as the others. We therefore had to setup an extra cage for her, and her babies. It’s been 10 days since, and we hope to be able to reintroduce her to the other two, once we move them into a larger cage in our own guinea pig room.
In the mean time, the all live in two separate cages here in the office! I set up a webcam, and started a stream, mostly to keep an eye on them when I am not in the office. They have been quite active in periods, and have been eating more or less nonstop ever since they arrived here!
